You got your reminder in the mail about your pet's annual exam.  Should you or shouldn't you - what could it hurt to skip a year - your pet seems normal.

Delaying your pet's annual exam can hurt since your pet does not always show when he/she is sick.  Most pets will hide their illnesses until they are advanced.  In addition, animals age more quickly than humans, one year can be about 5-10 comparative years in your pet's life.  A lot can change in that time.

Annual exams with your veterinarian will provide optimal health care and the best longevity for your pet.  Their special training and experience will help detect subtle illness that does not always show on a day-to-day basis.  Your vet will do a thorough exam which includes abdominal palpation for pain, checking the eyes for cataract, ears for cleaning or medication, teeth and gums for dental disease along with signs of allergies and skin problems.  Checking weight yearly helps to keep your pet in check from obesity or unusual weight loss.

As your pet goes into middle to old age, the annual exam becomes much more important.  Certain problems that may seem like "old age" may be an underling disease that is very treatable.  As your pet get older, your vet may recommend additional tests that help to determine the overall health of your pet.

Remember, the primary goal for your vet is to keep your pet healthy and provide the best care available.
